The Palace Grand
“a marvelous machine of creativity” – Vancouver Sun
In a strange and tiny steam-driven theatre a harrowing tale unfolds: in 1898, a mysterious Tracker with an anonymous commission hunts a man missing in the Canadian Arctic expanse north of the last bastion of civilization. His subject has apparently gone mad, suffering from cacoethes scribendi—the incurable passion for writing. Darkly comic, poetic, and stylistically inventive, The Palace Grand is a vaudevillian investigation into the unmapped wilderness of creation and imagination.

Written and performed by the Electric Company’s Jonathon Young, The Palace Grand is an enticing mirage of theatrical imagery from the always-innovative Electric Company, creators of such memorable and award-winning plays as Brilliant!, The Wake, The Score, Alcan Performing Arts Award winner Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, The One That Got Away, Flop, and last season’s smash hit, The Fall.
The Palace Grand is directed by the Electric Company’s Kevin Kerr, whose co-directing credits with Electric Company include The Wake and Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands. He and Young are joined by the other members of Electric Company, Kim Collier as Artistic Conspirator and David Hudgins as Video Designer. The creative team is rounded out by John Webber (lighting design, and set design with Jonathon Young), Rick Holloway (set décor and props), Kirsten McGhie (costumes). Jan Hodgson leads Stage Management, with Assistant Stage Manager Lisa Phillippe and Apprentice Stage Manager Marcella Hyde. Harry Vander Schee is Technical Director and Rory Gylander is Head Carpenter.
