By Electric Company's Jonathon Young and Kevin Kerr Directed by Kim Collier Produced by the Arts Club Theatre Company in association with Electric Company Theatre Coming in 2010 Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, Vancouver Electric Company premieres a stylish thriller inspired by the "reel" history of the Stanley Theatre, which opened as a movie house with Lillian Gish's first talkie in 1930. Caught between the forces of the mainstream and avant-garde, this multimedia spectacle is about the eternal struggle for control of our attention. In Tear the Curtain! classic film noir archetypes like the femme fatale, the hardboiled detective, and the mob boss are dismantled to uncover a darker, ever-shifting reality. Electric Company is excited to have been invited to the Banff Centre for the 2009 Banff Playwrights Colony in Alberta. Jonathon Young and Kevin Kerr spent ten days immediately following the close of our tour of Studies in Motion to continue development on Tear the Curtain!, our new creation set to premiere at the Arts Club during the 2010 Cultural Olympiad. Tear the Curtain! received a script and staging workshop, along with a public reading on Feb 16 2009. Among the attendees were representatives of PACT, the Arts Club, Vanoc, the BC Arts Council, and the City of Vancouver. The discussion was lively and all of it will help inform our creative process as the hybrid script/screenplay moves forward. |
